Student Art Contest Rules 2007

Entries:

1. All entries must be a response piece to the Philipse Manor Hall State Historic Site exhibit: Slavery: The Great and Foul Stain. Artists must have visited the exhibit to be qualified to participate in the contest.

2. All entries must be accompanied by a submission form. The form, which can be found at www.philipsemanorfriends.org, must include the artist's name, age, grade, address, phone number, school, and teacher. The form must also be signed by the artist's parent or guardian.

3. The submission form should not be attached to the front or back of the poster. Artists should not place their names or any other identifying information on the front of the poster.

4. All entries must be received at Philipse Manor Hall State Historic Site by 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 31, 2007.

5. All entries must be no larger than standard poster board size (22" x 28") and no smaller than 8˝" x 11". Entries which fall outside of these guidelines will be disqualified.

6. All entries must be submitted unframed and unmounted. All entries must be submitted in the final form in which contestants wish them to be displayed.

7. All entries will be judged in age-appropriate categories as follows: 1st to 3rd grade; 4th & 5th grade; 6th to 8th grade; and 9th to 12th grade.

8. Entries may be of any style, form, etc. Artists can use any media, including, but not limited to, watercolor, pen and ink, crayon, chalk, and markers. No preference is given to any one form over another.

9. Contest entries must be the original work of the artist.  Copyrighted images and logos (for example, cartoon characters, company logos, etc.) are not allowed.

10. Only one entry per artist will be accepted.

11. Collaborative efforts will not be accepted. Each entry must be the work of a single individual.

12. The staff of Philipse Manor Hall State Historic Site respects the right of individuals to freely express themselves through art, but we will not accept art that is explicitly offensive, (i.e. uses profanity, advocates violence or racism, or contains obscenities). 

13. Entries cannot be recalled or resubmitted after the initial submission.

Decisions:

14.  Contest entries will be judged on originality, creativity, artistic quality, and use of contest theme.

15.  Contest entries will be judged by a representative of Philipse Manor Hall (a staff member, director of the Friends of Philipse Manor Hall, or their designated representative). 

16.  The decisions of the judges are final. In case of a dispute, the decision of the Historic Site Manager of Philipse Manor Hall will be final.

Display

17.  All entries will be displayed in the Philipse Manor Hall State Historic Site Community Gallery from February 6, 2007 through March 4, 2007.

18.  Contestants may retrieve their entries during regular business hours (M to F, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.) after March 5, 2007.

19.  All entries must be picked up no later than March 30, 2007, or they will be considered abandoned and will become the property of Philipse Manor Hall State Historic Site.

Prizes and recognition:

20.  Staff members of Philipse Manor Hall, members of the Board of Directors of the Friends of Philipse Manor Hall, and members of their immediate families, are not eligible to win prizes.

21.  Prizes will be awarded to the winner and runner-up in each grade-appropriate category.

22.  Prizes and recognition include, but are not limited to:

The name of the winner and runner-up in each category will be published on the Friends of Philipse Manor Hall web site, www.PhilipseManorFriends.org (unless the contestant requests his or her name not be published).

The name of the winner and runner-up in each category will be published in our Spring/Fall 2007 newsletter (unless the contestant requests his or her name not be published).  Copies of the newsletter will be sent to each winner and runner-up.

The winner in each category will receive a one-year free student membership to Philipse Manor Hall State Historic Site.

23. The staff of Philipse Manor Hall State Historic Site reserves the right to make use of posters, images of submissions, and photos of participants for purposes of documentation and promotion.

24.  Winners will be notified by phone on or before Monday, February 12, 2007.

25. Winners will receive awards and recognition at the Artists Reception on Sunday, March 4, 2007 at 4:00 p.m.
