Constructed by the municipal government in 1900 for the enjoyment of the people of Yonkers, the Pier is one of the few structures of its type remaining on the Hudson. Its broad decks cooled by river breezes, the twostory steel pier boasts facilities for docking as well as a panoramic view stretching from the George Washington Bridge to the Tappan Zee.
Proctor Building
Proctors housed one of the oldest movie theaters in Yonkers. D.W. Griffith had just finished filming Lilian Gish in The Battle of the Sexes at the Reliance-Majestic studios in the southern part of the city when this 1915 Renaissance Revival style building was erected.
As theaters, department stores and hotels made downtown Yonkers their home, the area became the entertainment as well as commercial, economic, and administrative center of the growing city.
The Recreation Pier, which was renovated in the 1920s, was long a stop for the popular Hudson River liners.
