The advent of the trolley car heralded a new era in Yonkers’ growth, allowing large tracts of empty land to be developed as suburban neighborhoods. This Renaissance Revival style building, constructed at the turn of the century, is all the survives from the once extensive network of trolleys that covered the County.

dotpage.gif dotpage.gif Chartered in 1886, the trolley helped transform the city from a densely packed urban core to a sprawling suburban city, by 1911 the Yonkers system was serving over 14 million passengers annually.

New suburban railroad lines and commuter stations—such as the circa 1889 Getty Square station—were also built throughout the city, creating an efficient transportation web.

No longer having to walk to work, mass transportation enabled the middle and upper classes to flee the over–crowded and polluted downtown for new suburban areas.
