Along North Broadway, Main Street and in Getty Square, small commercial buildings were erected to serve the village’s growing population. Characteristic of these buildings is 52 North Broadway. Built in 1860, it is one of the oldest surviving buildings from the pre–Civil War era in downtown Yonkers.

dotpage.gif dotpage.gif 1852 saw the opening of the Getty House; described as “the most palatial and imposing structure outside of New York,” the hotel featured concert rooms and housed Yonkers’ first library.

Between 1854 and 1860 the village’s population tripled as workers flooded the community and areas around the downtown were developed into residential neighborhoods.
